GOVERNMENT HOUSE,”

16 ALL 070

HONGKONG,

6th July, 1936.

Sir,

I have the honour to refer to Mr. J.H. Thomas' confidential

circular despatch of 30th April, 1936, and to inform you that this

Colony has at present on hand no scheme in connection with which it

seems proper to invoke the aid of the Carnegie Corporation.

2. Although neither is a matter of immediate urgency, there

are, however, two undertakings which will require consideration at

a later date. One is the projected history of Hong Kong, and, in

this regard, I would invite reference to the correspondence

terminating in Mr. Thomas' confidential despatch of 7th April,1936.

The second is the provision for the Colony of a Public Library and

Museum to take the place of those formerly housed in the City Hall,

the demolition of which is dealt with in Sir William Peel's

confidential despatch of 17th December, 1931, and subsequent

correspondence.

3.

I shall be glad to be informed whether an application in

due course for assistance from the Corporation in connection with

either of these schemes would be likely to receive favourable

consideration.
